Isle of Man Highlights

Operating with its original rolling stock dating back to Victorian and Edwardian times, a journey on board the 130-year-old Manx Electric Railway will certainly be one to remember. This line connects Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey and, with the island being small, it is very easy to venture to all of these places and more in one incredible trip! Journeying from the waterfront town of Douglas to the seaside town of Peel on the other side of the island is only a 20-30-minute drive – and it is well worth it. Take the opportunity to visit the small fishing port and magnificent castle in Peel, with its rich history and roots in Celtic, Viking, and maritime past. If you are enjoying the history of the isle, you will love our adventure aboard the nostalgic Isle of Man Steam Railway, which still uses its original locomotives and carriages, our exploration of the wonderful Port Erin Steam Museum, and the heritage-filled tour to the south of the isle visiting the Village Folk Museum at Cregneash. Whether you’d prefer to explore the coastlines and countryside or enjoy heritage rail experiences, browse our carefully curated tours and start planning your Isle of Man discovery.

Food and Drink

Manx Queenies

Manx Queenies, comprised of scallops farmed in the Irish Sea, have been named the official national dish of the Isle of Man. They’re a very special delicacy of buttery and light Queen Scallops, served with a creamy sauce and crusty bread.

Manx Kippers

Manx kippers are possibly the most popular food on the Isle of Man. With a deep history and an even deeper flavour, these traditionally smoked and salty herrings are a must-try for any island visitor.

Peel Flapjack

One of the tastiest treats on the entire island is the ever-popular Peel flapjack, sold specially in the seaside town and enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. This oaty, tray-baked delight is very well-known, but is particularly delicious on the isle.

Smoked Salmon

The Isle of Man is renowned for its incredible array of seafood, which makes up a large chunk of the local diet. Perhaps the most popular of which is smoked salmon, caught locally and served to add a touch of luxury to any dish.

Douglas Bay

Douglas, located at the mouth of the River Douglas, features a two-mile sweep of bay. There, you will find the wonderful harbour, Douglas’ main commercial port, and promenade with its lovely gardens. The views are astonishing, featuring gorgeous blue waters and pleasant green hills.

Town Centre

Despite Douglas’ town centre being the main commercial centre of the island, the area still manages to keep its small-town charm. It is quaint, cobbled and wonderful, featuring a thriving high street filled with shops, as well as the many restaurants and cafés selling high-quality and delicious foods and drinks.

Laxey

Laxey Highlights

The lovely village of Laxey resides along the east coast and, while the harbour is small, it is beautiful. Surrounded by gorgeous, lush greenery and colourful homes, the harbour is also next to the sandy beach, with its lovely, blue waters.

History

Laxey is best known for its fabulous vintage railways and rich mining history. The village is a stop along the Manx Electric Railway, which continues to operate with Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock. Laxey is also home to the Great Laxey Wheel, the largest surviving original working waterwheel in the world and a fantastic sight to behold.

Snaefell Mountain Railway

Journey to the summit of Snaefell, the Isle of Man's highest mountain, onboard a mountain railway adventure, starring breathtaking and beautiful views. Look out over the ocean and you may even catch a glimpse of England, Scotland or Wales!

Peel

Peel Highlights

Historical Attractions

Visit the lovely town of Peel, known for its museums, history, and small fishing port. The museums include the House of Manannan – starring the phenomenal Odin's Raven, Manx Transportation Museum, and the Leece, which now features TT and Manx Grand Prix vintage bikes.

Ruins of Peel Castle

A highlight and huge tourist attraction of the town is Peel Castle, built in the 11th century by Norwegians. The castle is now owned by the Manx National Heritage organisation, which seeks to preserve the history of this significant and fantastic landmark.

Seaside Gastronomy

There is a reason why Peel is the summer destination of not only tourists, but for locals. This town has the best seaside treats on the island, especially at the Victorian promenade, including the loveliest ice cream, Manx Kippers, or chips, Manx cheese, and gravy!
