Food and Drink

Ragù alla Bolognese

The national dish of Italy, ragù alla bolognese, is often known by another name: spaghetti bolognese. Using fresh ingredients and a recipe from the Emilia Romagna region – renowned for its gastronomy and wine making – there is no better place to try this popular dish than in Italy.

Prosciutto di Parma

Made according to the highest possible standards, prosciutto di parma is a symbol of Italian tradition and authenticity. The cured ham can be cooked in many different ways, but always has a distinct flavour and sweet taste.

Risotto

The classic rice dish risotto originates in northern Italy and is cooked slowly in a flavourful broth, leaving behind a delicious creamy consistency. The most popular variation is the risotto alla Milanese, which has been infused with saffron for a special twist.

Tiramisu

Tiramisu is one of the most famous and popular Italian desserts ever. Using savoiardi ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, and a flavoured liqueur, this coffee-soaked delight is best tried authentically whilst visiting Italy.

Planning your Trip

With so much on offer, you might need some inspiration! We’ve hand-picked a selection of favourite destinations and provided an overview of the very best highlights...

Lake Garda

Lake Garda Highlights

Riva del Garda

Nestled in a scenic position at the northern end of the lake, Riva del Garda boasts colourful buildings, medieval towers, and a beautiful waterfront lined with delightful cafés – the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.

Malcesine

With its narrow winding streets, ancient harbour, and awe-inspiring views of the Monte Baldo Mountain, Malcesine is a quintessential Lake Garda town. The magnificent 13th century Scaligeri Castle is a must-see – be sure to climb to the top of the tower, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking lake views.

Sirmione

Perhaps the most picturesque town on Lake Garda, Sirmione is best known for the Scaliger Castle. Surrounded by a turquoise moat, walking the castle’s fort walls and climbing the tower offers a spectacular bird’s eye view of the town.

Rome

Rome Highlights

Trevi Fountain

Perhaps the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain is an unmissable sight when visiting Rome. A fine example of Baroque architecture, the fountain depicts Neptune on his chariot – be sure to throw a coin into the water to assure your return to the city!

Colosseum

The largest amphitheatre built during Roman times, the Colosseum is the symbol of Rome. Previously hosting exhibitions of exotic animals, gladiator fights, and executions of prisoners for 65,000 spectators, today this ancient landmark draws six million tourists per year, making it Italy’s most famous attraction.

Vatican City

The smallest independent state in the world, the Vatican is ruled by the Pope. The area is home to plenty of remarkable sights, including St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square, and the Vatican Museums, which boast an enormous art collection varying from Roman objects to religious relics.

Lake Como

Lake Como Highlights

Como

With its location on the southwest end of the lake and surroundings of lush, green hills, Como boasts outstanding natural scenery. The main square, Pizza Duomo, oozes with Italian charm, with the impressive Como Cathedral crowning its centre – this is also one of the most significant churches in Northern Italy!

Tremezzo

A charming town nestled on the western banks of Lake Como, Tremezzo is home to one of the most beautiful villas in the area – Villa Carlotta. The villa is renowned for its botanical garden, which is bursting with ancient trees, palms, rhododendrons, azaleas and more, whilst the museum showcases masterpieces by Canova, Hayez and Thorvaldsen.

Tuscany

Tuscany Highlights

Pisa

Pisa may be synonymous with the Leaning Tower, but this impressive monument is just one of many notable sights in the city. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a prime example of the Pisan-Romanesque architectural style, whilst Piazza dei Miracoli is home to the magnificent Duomo and baptistery.

Florence

The capital of Tuscany, Florence, is renowned for its breathtaking architecture and array of historic treasures. Some of the city’s most significant sights include the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Palace and Gallery with its impressive works of art by Botticelli, Caravaggio and Titian.

Siena

Nestled in the picturesque Tuscan hills, Siena is romantic, compact, and brimming with artistic and historical gems. The Duomo di Siena is one of Italy’s finest examples of Gothic architecture, whilst the Piazza del Campo is the perfect place to soak up the city’s charming atmosphere.

Sorrento

Sorrento Highlights

Old Town

With its narrow, cobblestone streets full of artisan workshops, boutiques, churches and limoncello shops, Sorrento’s historic centre is certainly charming. Take in the beautiful architecture as you explore, and be sure to enjoy a coffee in the city’s main square, Piazza Tasso.

Marina Grande

Despite its name translating to ‘big marina,’ Marina Grande is actually the smaller of Sorrento’s two marinas. One of the most picturesque areas of the city, Marina Grande boasts a volcanic sand beach and a waterfront lined with delightful restaurants.

Cloister of San Francesco

Originally built as a monastery in the 7th century, the cloister is a showpiece of architectural styles and one of Sorrento’s most notable sights. A distinctive tree stands proudly in the centre, which provides the perfect backdrop for weddings that are held here.
